Frequently asked questions
If yours isn't here, email hello@storenextdoor.com.au - we'd rather answer it than have you guess.
For renters
Finding a space, paying for it, and getting your things in and out.
Is the price I see the price I pay?
Yes. Prices are all-inclusive and nothing is added at checkout. The weekly figure on a listing is what the space costs you.
It is charged monthly: the weekly price multiplied by 52 and divided by 12. That gives you the same amount every month rather than a bill that changes with the length of the month.
When am I charged?
Not while you're waiting. Sending a request costs nothing, and nothing is taken if the host declines or doesn't answer.
If the host accepts, you'll get an email with a payment link. That first payment starts the booking, and the same amount is taken automatically each month after it.
What if the host doesn't reply?
A request expires 24 hours after you send it. Nothing is charged, and you're free to request another space - or the same one again later.
When do I find out the address?
Once your first payment clears. Until then a listing shows the suburb and the general area, never the street number.
With the address you get whatever access details the host has written down - a gate code, where the key is, which side of the house to use. They stop being shown when the booking ends.
Can I see the space before I commit?
Message the host and ask. Most are happy to arrange it, and it's a fair thing to want before you move your things somewhere.
Messaging is free and commits you to nothing.
What can I store?
Whatever you and the host agree on. Say what you're planning to store when you send the request - they see it before they accept, and it saves you both a wasted trip.
Nothing illegal, nothing hazardous, nothing living. Beyond that it's between the two of you.
How do I stop renting?
Give two weeks' notice from your booking page. You keep access until the end of the billing period you've already paid for, and the booking then ends by itself.
There's no exit fee and nothing to cancel separately.
Do I get a refund for the rest of the month?
No. Notice runs to the end of the period you've already paid for and you keep access for all of it, so there's nothing to refund and nothing is pro-rated.
Can the host ask me to leave?
They can, and they give thirty days rather than your fourteen - it's your belongings that have to move, so the longer notice sits on their side.
If it happens, tell us and we'll help you find somewhere else.
What if the space isn't as described?
Tell us straight away. Nothing about a booking is locked in for a year, and we hold the listing, the messages and the payment history, which is usually enough to establish what happened.
Is my stuff insured?
Not by us, and generally not by the host's home policy either. Check that your contents insurance covers goods stored away from home - many policies do, some want to be told first.
It's worth five minutes before you move anything in.
For hosts
What you earn, when you're paid, and how much say you have over who stores with you.
What do you take?
Nothing off your side. You set a weekly price and that is what you receive - our fee is a markup on the renter's price, not a deduction from yours.
A $50 a week space earns you $50 a week.
When do I get paid?
Monthly, after each renter payment clears, straight to your bank account through Stripe.
You'll need to finish Stripe's onboarding before a booking on your space can be paid for. It takes a few minutes and asks for your bank details and ID. Stripe holds them; we never see them.
How do I know what to charge?
When you list, we show you what comparable spaces in your suburb are charging, so you're not guessing.
You can change your price whenever you like. A change applies to new bookings only - never to a renter already in place.
Do I have to accept everyone?
No. Every request is yours to accept or decline, and you see who's asking and what they want to store before you decide.
You have 24 hours to answer. After that the request expires on its own.
Who sees my address?
Only a renter with a paid, active booking on your space. Search results and your public listing show the suburb and an approximate location, never the street number.
When the booking ends, they stop seeing it.
Can I take a break?
Yes - pause your listing and it stops appearing in search. Nothing is deleted and you can put it back whenever you like.
Pausing affects new enquiries, not a renter already in place; an existing booking carries on as it was.
How long until my listing is live?
A person reviews every listing before it goes live, usually within a day. A listing without a photo can't be approved.
Do I have to be home when they come?
That's between you and your renter, and it's worth settling before you accept. Put the arrangement in your listing - when they can come, and what they'll need to get in - so nobody turns up expecting something different.
What about tax?
Income from hosting is income. Keep your records - we keep your payment history available for seven years - and talk to your accountant about your own situation.
Am I covered if something happens?
We don't insure stored goods, and a home and contents policy generally won't cover someone else's belongings on your property. Tell your insurer what you're planning before you start - some policies have something to say about it.
Safety and trust
Storing with a neighbour only works if both sides can see who they're dealing with.
How do you check listings?
A person reviews every listing before it goes live, and one without a photo can't be approved. We check the address is real, the photos are of the space being offered, and the description matches.
What do you show about me?
Your first name and last initial, your photo if you've added one, and when you joined.
Your email address, your phone number and your street address are never shown to the other party - messages go through us, and a host's exact address is released only once a booking is paid for.
What if something goes wrong?
Contact us and we'll work with both sides. We hold the booking record, the messages and the payment history, which is usually enough to establish what happened.
If someone is in danger, call 000 first, then tell us so we can act on our side.
How do I report a listing or a person?
Email hello@storenextdoor.com.au with what happened and the listing or booking it relates to. We read every one.
